In John 17:17 Jesus asked His Father, “Sanctify them by Your truth, Your word is truth.” John 14:6 says, “I am the way, the truth, and the life…” John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

Verse 14 says, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

John 8:31-32 says, “…If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” 

The Strong’s definition for know is: to perceive, understand, recognize, gain knowledge, realize, come to know. It is the knowledge that has an inception, a progress, and an attainment. It is the recognition of truth by personal experience.

Ephesians 3:19 Amplified says, “(That you may really come) to know (practically, through experience for yourselves) the love of Christ, which far surpasses mere knowledge without experience)…”

Great assurance! I love Titus 1:2 which says that it is impossible for God to lie. Genesis 18:10 was Abraham’s promise. It says, “…I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son…”

Genesis 21:1 says, “And the Lord visited Sarah as He had said and the Lord did for Sarah as He had spoken.” I wonder if Abraham recounted God’s words ever so often, thanking Him for what He would do.

Verse 2 says, “For Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.” God has a set time fulfilled through His impeccable timing. Not before nor after, but in the exact timing of His purpose.

Ephesians 1:11 says, “…being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will.”

Romans 4:16 says, “Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace…” We are saved by grace, and He empowers us to live by grace. 

I love the story of Abraham recapped in Romans 4. Verse 18 says, “Who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, So shall your descendants be.”

Though our circumstances may seem impossible, we have a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3. Our trials bring us through a progression. Recapping Romans 5:3-5. Tribulation produces perseverance, that produces character, that produces hope which does not disappoint. 

Romans 4:19 recorded that Abraham was about one hundred years old, and Sarah’s womb was dead. Yet verse 20 says, “He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief…” Amplified says, “…he grew strong and was empowered by faith AS he gave praise and glory to God.”

Are you thanking the Lord now for the promises He has given you through His word? We stand and keep on standing though our circumstances do not outwardly change, The Lord is at work, “…who works all things according to the counsel of His will.”

Thanksgiving is our powerful weapon against negative thoughts that plague us when we are slighted, offended, ignored, or we fall into a downward spiral of self-condemnation. Psalm 103:1 says, “Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless His holy name!”

Hosea 4:6 says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge…” Isaiah 5:13 says, “Therefore my people have gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge.”

Where does knowledge come from? Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”

2 Peter 1:3 says, “As His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.”

The more we get to know the Lord through His word, the more our heart’s reservoir is filled with praise. Praise is like a relief valve for pent up emotions. Praise defeats the enemy’s purpose to keep us overwhelmed.

Song of the Altar

In the midst of adversity when trouble surrounds me. I come into Your presence and I build an altar. I remember how You met me time and time again and I bow in worship.

Nothing can overtake me when I hide in You. Nothing can overwhelm me when I look to You. I set my eyes on You and I gaze into Your face. I bask in the love of Your eyes full of grace.

No one can comfort me like You O Lord. I will make Your presence my abiding place as I hide in You from the tempest of this storm. Yes I’ll hide in You as I bow and worship at Your feet.

Hebrews 13:15 says, “Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.”

Psalm 100:4 says, “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.”

Are you troubled? Are you overwhelmed by your life’s circumstances? Are you facing the impossible? Jesus’ timeless invitation says, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28.

David was overwhelmed. Psalm 61:1-2 says, “Hear my cry, O God; attend to my prayer, From the end of the earth I will cry to You, when my heart is overwhelmed; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”

We get overwhelmed when our troubles loom over us like a giant impossibility. We can draw an application from David’s prayer. When we are stressed, we can reset by coming to the Lord. Hiding in Him through the promises of His word will take us from fight or flight to rest and digest.

If we don’t turn to the Lord, we will turn to our own thoughts of what to do. He is the only One who has the answer. Otherwise we will be like the hamster on the wheel. A racing mind only keeps us in our sympathetic and emotional exhaustion. 

We live in stressful times. We often operate from our sympathetic unknowingly. The Lord created our fight or flight response for when we face danger. However, there are other situations that trigger it even though we are in no danger.

Let’s look at a few. Rejection, betrayal, feeling overwhelmed, dissatisfied in relationships, and holding onto past hurts keeps us in fight or flight.

Our parasympathetic is for rest and digest. It is a state of calm. We can switch from fight or flight to rest and digest, through our thoughts, deep breathing, or prayer.

When Jesus had a busy day, He retreated to commune with His Father. Luke 5:16 says, “So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed.” He knew how to reset.

We can also reset through meditation in His word. John 15:7 says, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you…” Our Good Shepherd wants us to come to Him to find rest.

Proverbs 16:23-24 says, “The heart of the wise teaches his mouth, and adds learning to his lips. Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.”

I looked up about the honeycomb. It says, “Blood vessels and bone marrow run through other parts of the bones. The holes in the honeycomb-like mesh actually make the bones stronger.”

What weakens bones? In Ezekiel 37 we find one root cause. Speaking of Israel it reveals what they said, “…Our bones are dry, our hope is lost…” Feelings of hopelessness create a stress response of fight or flight.

We are created with two nervous systems. The sympathetic is triggered when we face imminent danger. However it can also be triggered by our negative thoughts and emotions. Our brain doesn’t distinguish between the two.

Chronic stress affects every aspect of our health. Psalm 131:2 says, “Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul…” Learning to be still is a practice that keeps us in our parasympathetic state, which allows for rest and digest. 

Before you eat today, pause and be still so your food will have the inner calmness it needs to properly digest your food ~ even before you give thanks for it.

Proverbs 18:20 says, “A man’s stomach shall be satisfied from the fruit of his mouth; from the produce of his lips he shall be filled.”

That verse reminds me of Psalm 103:5. It says, “Who satisfies your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagles.”

Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” 

Here is a note in my Bible about this verse. ‘A person’s life largely reflects the fruit of his tongue. To speak life is to speak God’s perspective on any issue of life; to speak death is to declare life’s negatives, to declare defeat, or complain constantly.’

Psalm 59 was written by David. Saul had sent men with orders to kill David. 1 Samuel 19:11-18. 

Verses 16-17 says, “But I will sing of Your power; yes, I will sing aloud of Your mercy in the morning; for You have been my defense and refuge in the day of my trouble. To You, O my Strength, I will sing praises; for God is my defense, my God of mercy.”

Psalm 89:1 says, “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever; with my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.”

I have been memorizing Psalm 119:73-80. Are you in a trial now? Verse 75 says, “I know, O Lord, that Your judgements are right, and that in faithfulness You have afflicted me.” No matter how hard our trials are, the Lord uses them to confirm us to His image. See Romans 8:28-29. 

Yesterday I worked on verse 76. I am still rejoicing in these two words together ‘merciful kindness.’

It says, Let, I pray, Your merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to Your word to Your servant.”

May the Lord’s merciful kindness sustain you as He faithfully upholds you in your trials.
