Our Great Physician

I woke up with Exodus 15:26 in my thoughts. It is a promise with a condition given to the children of Israel. Yet, it applies to us as well because the Lord does everything through His word. It says, “…If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.”

The Hebrew word for ‘heals’ means doctor. It is Yahweh-Ropheka. When we disobey God’s word, we open the door to dis-ease. Hebrews 12:15 is a great reminder of what happens with bitterness. Notice how it blocks grace. It says, “Looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled.”

What happened when the children of Israel complained? Numbers 11:1 says, “Now when the people complained, it displeased the Lord; for the Lord heard it, and His anger was aroused…” Psalm 107:20 says, “He sent His word and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions.” Bitterness and complaining are toxic destroyers. Bitterness causes acid to drip on our neural connections which corrodes them.

Many diseases have spiritual roots. Our Great Physician stands by to heal us spiritually, emotionally, and physically. I do not know when my self-hatred and self-rejection began, but I know when it ended. For years I had spoken death words over my body. One day the Lord stopped me in my tracks by sending His word to heal me.

Our words come from our thoughts. Psalm 139:14 says, “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works, and that my soul knows very well.” Romans 9:20 says about the clay in the potter’s hands. “But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, Why have you made me like this?”

Jeremiah 1:5 says of God’s prophet, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you…” Let’s go back to Psalm 139:13. David said, “For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb.” Verse 15 says, “My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.” Our Creator has known us before conception, and created us to be how He knew our whole life would play out.

Our destructive thoughts and ways disrupt His design. Did you know that one pound of excess fat requires 7 miles of new blood vessels and capillaries to support it? Excess pounds put stress on your heart, making it work far harder than it was designed to work.

Our toxic lifestyle habits destroy our good gut bacteria. 70% of our immune system, and neurotransmitters are in our gut. Street and pharmaceutical drugs, alcohol, sugar, white flour, all artificial sweeteners, and processed foods destroy what God has created to keep us healthy. All disease starts in the gut. Let us honor Him through obedience to His word, so that our destructive ways do not block His grace. Let us honor Him with the quality of life He designed us to serve Him with.
