Our conscience is a God-given gift. A clear conscience is a gift we give ourselves. A guilty conscience is a reminder that we have an unresolved issue. It dogs our steps. It is an entanglement.
A runner needs to be free of any weight that would thwart, hinder, obstruct, or impede them. Hebrews 12:1 is talking about our race or walk with the Lord. It says, “…let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.”
The Amplified uses the words clings and entangles. Here is my illustration from what happened 14 years ago or so. I had just given my chickens some veggie scraps and was walking back to the house. As I lifted my foot off the grass to put it on the sidewalk that led to the back steps, I was instantly entangled. It happened so fast. This thin LONG snake appeared. I tried to step away. It was trying to get away, but we were entangled.
Hidden sin clings to our conscience like a barnacle. You can’t pry it loose. It has to be brought out into the open and confessed before the One who has known all along.
Mark 4:22 says, “For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light.” I love Hebrews 3:13 Amplified. It says that all things are open, exposed, naked, and defenseless before Him.
I am so grateful! That means He knows and He will show me what is buried in my unconscious that weighs me down and hinders my race of endurance.
Hebrews 10:36 says that we have need of endurance. That word is one of my favorite Greek words in the Strong’s. It means: constancy, perseverance, continuance, bearing up, steadfastness, holding out, and patient endurance.
