Deception is one of satan’s primary weapons. If he can get us to believe his lies, he can build a stronghold of pride in our hearts. He knows that our faith pleases the Lord. Therefore he wants to rule in our heart through the things that will destroy our faith.
Proverbs 16:18 says, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” We see this played out in Saul. 1 Samuel 15 is the narrative. I would encourage you to read it. Watch how pride rises up in Saul’s heart when he is questioned by Samuel.
1 Samuel 15:23 says, “For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord…”
There is the crux of disobedience—rejecting God’s word. It is only through His word that we learn how to obey Him.
Here are seven great verses to help us recognize and understand the power of His word at work. Psalm 119:1-7 says, “Blessed are the undefiled in the way, who walk in the law of the Lord! Blessed are those who keep His testimonies, who seek Him with the whole heart. They also do no iniquity; they walk in His ways. You have commanded us to keep Your precepts diligently. Oh, that my ways were directed to keep Your statutes! Then I would not be ashamed, when I look into all Your commandments. I will praise You with uprightness of heart, when I learn Your righteous judgments.”
Here is another one that David wrote. Psalm 19:7 says, “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple.”
As we hide God’s word in our heart, it becomes His tool to convert our thoughts from proud to humble. His word is truth that will hone our thoughts to align with His will and ways.
